Resistendo, respirando – In memoria di George Floyd (14 ottobre 1973 – 25 maggio 2020)

Poesia di Roberto Malini

L’autore ha scritto questa poesia in occasione della tragedia di Minneapolis, in cui ha perso la vita George Floyd. Nella traduzione di Glenys Robinson (che presentiamo sotto al testo in italiano), “Resistendo, respirando” si sta diffondendo presso gruppi umanitari e circoli culturali antirazzisti negli Stati Uniti – a partire dal Minnesota – e nel mondo anglosassone, come un inno di cività e giustizia.

Resistendo, respirando

di Roberto Malini

In memoria di George Floyd (14 ottobre 1973 – 25 maggio 2020)

Prima di morire
George Floyd
disse
con l’ultimo filo di voce:
“Non posso respirare”.

“Non posso respirare”.

E morì
soffocato,
con il peso
della Terra
inginocchiato
sulla sua gola.

Vicino a lui
non c’eri tu,
non c’ero io,
non c’era Atlante
e non c’erano ancora
i fiori.

Così George morì
senza respiro
sull’asfalto
di Mills City.

Senza respiro,
senza il suo respiro,
senza il nostro respiro,
che è l’ossigeno
della libertà.

Senza il nostro respiro
che deve fluire
in tutto il mondo
senza fermarsi,
dall’Africa
all’Asia,
dall’Europa
all’Oceania,
fino alle Americhe.

Senza il nostro respiro,
principio di vita,
fotosintesi
del sogno
di civiltà
che inseguiamo
da millenni.

Come si fa
a non piangere,
adesso,
a non urlare
che George
è ancora vivo
in noi,
nel nostro sogno,
nei nostri corpi
affamati d’aria
e di giustizia?

E allora urliamo
che non possiamo respirare,
che il peso
della Terra
e l’asfalto
delle città
ci uccidono.

Urliamo che la misura
è colma,
che non sopporteremo più
la gravità dell’ordine,
i ginocchi dell’autorità.

Aspetteremo in piedi
sull’asfalto
quei mostri,
stavolta
con il peso
della Terra
sotto di noi,
resistendo,
respirando.

Resisting, Breathing

by Roberto Malini – English translation by Glenys Robinson

In Memory of George Floyd (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020)

Before he died
George Floyd
said
in a last faint whisper:
“I can’t breathe”.

“I can’t breathe”.

And he died
suffocated,
with the weight
of the Earth
kneeling
on his throat.

Next to him –
not you,
not me,
not Atlas
and no flowers
as yet.

And George died
out of breath
on the asphalt
of Mills City.

Without breath,
without his breath,
without our breath,
the oxygen
of freedom.

Without our breath
that must flow
throughout the world
never ceasing,
from Africa
to Asia,
from Europe
to Oceania,
as far as the Americas.

Without our breath,
the beginning of life,
photosynthesis
of the dream
of civilization
that we have been pursuing
for millennia.

How can we
not weep
now,
and not yell out
that George
is still alive
in us,
in our dream,
in our bodies
hungry for air
and justice?

So let’s all shout out
that we cannot breathe,
that the weight
of the Earth
and the asphalt
of our cities
are killing us.

Let us shout out that the measure
is full to the brim,
that we will no longer endure
the gravity of order,
the knees of authority.

We will wait, standing up,
on the asphalt
for those monsters,
this time
with the weight
of the Earth
beneath us,
resisting,
breathing.
